26,000 kilos of illegal kebab meat seized in Barcelona
Central Europe-manufactured product had not undergone health controls
The Civil Guard has seized 26,000 kilograms of unregulated kebab meat from two companies in Barcelona that were trying to supply it to bars and restaurants.
The meat, which was manufactured in central Europe and not subjected to health controls, was stored in two warehouses, one in Badalona, which contained 20,000 kilos, and another in Sant Adri¨¤ del Bes¨°s, which held 6,000 kilos.
The operation was part of a joint initiative between Europol and Interpol to dismantle networks manufacturing, distributing and selling food and drink that are either counterfeit, of poor quality, or not subject to compulsory health checks.
Last year the Civil Guard seized 500 tons of illegal foodstuffs and 400,000 liters of illegal drinks.
This is not the first time that kebab meat has been a source of controversy in Spain. In October the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) detected horse, chicken and turkey meat in various kebabs that claimed to be beef.
