An Al Shabaab leader who was connected to the 2013 West Gate Mall attack in Nairobi, Kenya was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Somalia, the Pentagon confirmed Wednesday.
Adnan Garar was a key operative responsible for coordinating Al Shabaab’s external operations, which target Americans and other Western interests. He posed a major threat to the region and in the international community, the Pentagon said.
An unmanned aircraft struck a vehicle carrying Garar on March 12 in Diinsoor, Somalia.
“His death has a dealt another significant blow to the Al Shabaab terrorism organization in Somalia,” the Department of Defense said in a statement.
